Faculty & Staff Information
Lab Computing - Suffolk Campus

We have designed this web site to assist you in using the computer labs available at St. Joseph's College.
We request that you follow the guidelines below to make your computing practices at St. Joseph's both productive and enjoyable.

St. Joseph's College currently has six computer labs in the new Business and Technology building and one in O'Connor hall. The BT labs are located in rooms B-6, B-10, B-11, B-14, 1-15, and 1-12. The lab in O'Connor Hall is located in room N223 and is considered an "Open Lab" for the students. Lab 1-15 is our Multimedia lab, which contains software like Dreamweaver, Director Shockwave, Flash, Fireworks, etc. Lab 1-12 is our Child Study wireless lab that has movable tables so that students can easily work in groups. B-6 is our "Open Lab" for the BT building which has a wide range on software that the students can work with. For more information about what software is in which lab, check out our Software Information.

St. Joseph's College has recently added 24 Smart Classrooms on the second and third floor of O'Connor hall. These smart classrooms are equipped with a computer, Dvd/Vcr Player, Receiver, Projector and Speakers.

At any "Open Lab" time, faculty & staff may come in and use the computer labs. These times and scheduled classes are posted outside of each lab. Each open lab is equipped with a color flatbed scanner, zip drive, CD-Rom Recorder* and a color deskjet printer for your use.

Open Labs during the weekend and non-scheduled Reserved Classes are also published outside of each computer lab. You can view our scheduled Open Labs and Class Labs on this site.

In general, logging in to a computer is as simple as typing the username, which is student and the password is sjc (the same goes for our portable projector).

Faculty & staff may reserve a portable projector, computer lab or smart classroom for a class session by clicking on the link, Reserve a Projector, Computer Lab or Smart Classroom (Faculty and Staff ONLY).

Faculty & staff are welcomed and encouraged to take one or more Instructional Computing Workshops which are offered at various times throughout the semester. For more information, check out the St. Joseph's Faculty and Staff Technology Training page.

Software may be requested by instructors to be installed on our computer labs prior to the start of each semester. If the request for additional software is being made during the semester, you must contact the lab administrators at labs@sjcny.edu at least two weeks in advance. During the semester, additional installs are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Printing is free, however, please try and conserve the paper (help save a tree). Use your programs Print Preview function to make all corrections prior to printing final copies.

Food and beverages are NOT permitted in the computer labs at any time.

Always save important files and documents to a floppy disk. Our computers systems will reverse any changes made to the system upon each restart. This will include any files you have saved to the hard drive.

When purchasing floppy disks, please try to obtain those that are High Density and that have a plastic slide rather than metal. Metal slides tend to become dented and bent and therefore are more prone to breaking off in the floppy drive. Not only does this damage the computer, it puts you files and documents in jerpardy.

Even though most disks come preformatted, it is a good idea to reformat them prior to use.

* Lab N223 has been newly renovated with the most up to date computers where each computer is equipped with a CD-Rom Recorder.
