How
do I format a disk?
You
can format a disk simply by inserting one into the floppy
drive (drive "A") and right clicking your mouse
on the "Shortcut to 3 1/2 Floppy A:" icon located
on the desktop. Select "Format" from the menu that
pops up and the computer will ask you if you would like to
format the drive. Click on "Yes". Remember that
this process erases ALL DATA from the disk. Generally speaking,
you only need to do this once before saving your information.

Am
I protected against computer viruses?
All
computers are equipped with McAfee Virus Shield and are updated
when necessary for your software and hardware protection.
In the event that McAfee discovers a virus while you are working,
please see a Lab Assistant who will assist you in the removal
of it.

Hey!
I saved a document to this machine's hard drive yesterday
and today it's gone! What happened?
Any
and all changes made to the hard drive are reversed when our
computers are restarted. Daily procedures dicate that we shut
down each machine each night, even if the computer is not
restarted during any given day.

I
saved a file at home, but I can't open it on campus. Any ideas?
Certainly.
In general, it's helpful if you format any disks using a lab
computer before using it at home. This helps to initialize
the disk to the most compatible format for campus and home.
First off, try and save the file at home using an application
that we have available on campus. Please see the list above,
What software is available? for more information.
Despite this, if you still can't open a file, please see a
Lab Assistant who will try and diagnose the problem with you
and escalate the issue to a higher lever if he/she is unable
to resolve the issue. We will always try our best to make
sure that you hard work is not lost due to a technicality.
Remember that floppy disks DO INDEED FAIL. Back up important
files and documents, such as you Senior Thesis, on one or
more disks and print at least one hard copy. It's better to
spend two hours retyping you paper than doing two more weeks
of research.

Help!
I was working and suddenly this big blue screen with indescribable
text came up!
This
is called the Blue Screen of Death. Unfortunately, there is
no way to recover from this type of error aside from powering
the machine down and then powering it back up. While this
occurence is rare, it does happen from time to time. We highly
recommend that you save your work often so as to not lose
any important changes you have made.
In the event that you encounter the Blue Screen of Death,
please see a Lab Assistant. While we're sure you're capable
of shutting the machine's power off yourself, it is important
for us to take note of some of the "indescribable text"
so we might determine if the problem is isolated or system-wide.

I
have a PowerPoint presentation that I want to show in class.
How can I do this?
If
you'd like to show a PowerPoint presentation or use the Internet
in a classroom, you can reserve a portable projector for that
class time.
Students wishing to reserve a projector must contact their
instructor who can reserve the unit.
Faculty and Staff wishing to reserve a projector may do so
using the link to the left. Faculty and Staff can also reserve
an entire computer lab for a class session.

First

then check our Lost and Found box, there is one box located
on the first floor in the MCE Library. The box is next
to the printer by the pod computers in the Library.
Valuables such as keys, wallets, etc. are given to the Front
desk located on the first floor of MCE.
