of Arts and Sciences | Academic Programs Majors study both pure and applied mathematics to prepare for a wide variety of careers including business, education and computer technology. The presence of mathematics in daily life is the focus of such introductory classes for nonmajors as Excursions in Contemporary Mathematics. Majors bring theory to life through engaging seminar problems, including investigating the algebra behind Rubiks Cube and the challenge of teaching a computer to learn Tic–Tac–Toe. Small classes, computer–aided instruction, and peer tutoring ensure that students have a firm grasp of material and advance at an excellent rate. Careers to consider include accounting; actuarial science; architecture; data processing; economics; engineering; finance; government service; manufacturing operations; market research; medical research; product design; statistics; surveying and drafting; systems analysis; test analysis; and high school and university teaching.
